Ypsilanti is a Huron River college town in Washtenaw County, roughly seven miles east of Ann Arbor, built around Eastern Michigan University and the walkable 19th-century railroad district known as Depot Town. It carries a Greek name honoring a hero of the Greek War of Independence, a WWII legacy as the home of the Willow Run bomber plant and Rosie the Riveter, and a brick water tower so suggestively shaped that a magazine once crowned it the world's most phallic building. A French-Canadian fur trader established a trading post on the site in 1809.
Local landmarks and gathering spots include Michigan Firehouse Museum, in an 1898 firehouse at 110 West Cross Street that served until 1975; Ypsilanti Automotive Heritage Museum, tied to the city's Hydramatic transmission history. ElvisFest replaced an earlier Ypsilanti music festival, the Bob Marley Festival.
The city's name honors a Greek independence leader, and 'Ypsilanti' was shortened to 'Ypsi' early on because of the difficulty spelling and pronouncing it. Small business, hospitality, and the arts cluster in Depot Town and along the Huron River riverfront. For Ypsilanti property owners, K&R covers debris removal, seasonal lawn work, leaf and brush pickup and snow clearing across the whole community. Local ZIPs served include 48111, 48197, 48198.
