Taylor sits Downriver, southwest of Detroit, and it filled out after World War II with families who came north for auto-plant jobs and housing they could afford. The township was organized in 1847 from the western part of Ecorse Township, settled early by German immigrants who farmed for subsistence. Residents wear the nickname 'Taylortucky' on purpose, a reference to the Southern, Kentucky and Appalachian roots many families brought with them for factory work.

Heritage Park runs to roughly 400 acres of lakes, trails and historical exhibits, including a replica of the Hand Train Station, and it hosts the Taylor Summer Festival each late June with rides and concerts at the Sheridan Center open-air pavilion. Taylor Meadows Golf Club is the other big open space. A Little League team from here won a world championship, which locals still bring up, and it fits a city that is proud of being blue collar and no frills.
