Riverview is small, Downriver, and right on the Detroit River in Wayne County, about 14 miles southwest of downtown. Population jumped more than 400 percent between 1950 and 1960, which is why so much of the housing stock reads postwar. The city also sits on War of 1812 ground as the site of the Battle of Monguagon.

Its best known landmark is also its least likely: a municipal landfill that the city turned into a ski hill in the 1980s and locals nicknamed 'Mount Trashmore.' Much of the 1812 battlefield remains open land. The Detroit River waterfront and the Wayne County toll bridge over to Grosse Ile round out the map, and golf at Riverview Highlands carries on the recreation legacy of the old ski hill.

Heat from decomposing trash inside the landfill kept melting the snow, so the unprofitable ski hill was decommissioned in the 1990s and converted to golf. Riverview Highlands, a 27-hole municipal golf property, operates on and around that former site.
