Redford Charter Township is an inner-ring suburb in Wayne County that borders Detroit about 15 miles northwest of downtown. The name comes from a 'red ford' across the River Rouge that early settlers used, since 'rouge' is French for red. It was rural and agricultural for a long time and urbanized quickly in the 20th century as Detroit expanded. The 2020 census counted 49,504 residents, and the Black population here roughly doubled between 2000 and 2010.

The Redford Theatre, a 1928 atmospheric movie palace, still runs one of fewer than forty Barton theatre organs left in its original installation. Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School is the other well-known landmark. Folk musician Sufjan Stevens named an instrumental after the township, 'Redford (For Yia-Yia & Pappou),' on his 2003 album 'Michigan,' written about his grandparents; 'Yia-Yia' and 'Pappou' are Greek for grandmother and grandfather.
