Commerce Township spreads across nearly 30 square miles of western Oakland County about 34 miles northwest of downtown Detroit, and roughly 8% of it is water. It started as a lake resort destination and became a permanent suburb of 43,000 without losing the lakes, the Huron River, or most of Proud Lake State Recreation Area. Commerce Township was organized for self-government on March 7, 1834, when the original Novi Township was cut into quarters to create Commerce and Lyon Townships. Milford Township split off from Lyon the following year, in 1835.
